Charcoal vs Colour Portrait: Which to Choose

Both are hand-drawn and both make excellent gifts — the right choice comes down to the mood you want, the room it will hang in, and the photo you're starting from. Here's how we actually advise customers at the studio.

The short answer

Choose charcoal for a timeless, emotional, gallery feel — especially for black-and-white memories, portraits of elders, memorials, and anything you want to feel classic.
Choose colour when the colours in the photo matter — a bright outfit, a wedding, a child's eyes, a pet's coat — or when the piece hangs in a lively, colourful room.

Charcoal portraits

Charcoal is our starting style and what many people picture when they think “hand-drawn portrait”. It renders skin, hair and expression with dramatic light and deep blacks. It is forgiving of older or black-and-white source photos, and it reads beautifully from across a room.

Charcoal works best when

The photo is black-and-white, faded, or has mixed/awkward colour lighting.
You want a solemn, heartfelt or heritage feel (anniversaries, remembrance, parents and grandparents).
The wall or décor is neutral and you want the artwork to be the quiet focal point.

Colour portraits

Colour brings the exact palette of the moment to life — the sari, the turban, the birthday balloons, the golden-hour light. It needs a reasonably good-colour source photo to shine, and it tends to feel more contemporary and energetic.

Colour works best when

Colour is the point: outfits, décor, festival or wedding scenes, pets.
The source photo already has good, natural colour and lighting.
The room is bright or colourful and you want the piece to feel lively.

Standard vs Premium (either style)

Within both charcoal and colour we offer a Standard (character-focused) and a Premium (full scene with background) version. Premium recreates the setting around the subject — useful when the background of the photo is part of the memory.

A quick way to decide

Is the source photo strong in colour? If not, lean charcoal.
Is the occasion solemn/heritage (charcoal) or celebratory/vivid (colour)?
Does the background matter? If yes, consider a Premium version.
